About This Item

New York: Granary Books, 1999. First printing. (18) pp., 5.5 x 8.75 inches. With an afterword by Kevin Killian, and reproductions of collages by Fran Herndon. Of an edition of 150 copies, one of 50 hors commerce, signed by Fran Herndon at the colophon. Designed and printed letterpress by Philip Gallo at the Hermetic Press; images printed on a Canon 1000 Laser Color Copier; books bound in printed paper over boards at the Campbell-Logan Binder. As new.

In 1997, while Kevin Killian was assisting artist Fran Herndon with the preparation of her archive, they came upon the unpublished manuscript of this serial poem by Jack Spicer, which had been part of a collaboration with Herndon, a follow-up in a sense to their collaboration on the “Homage to Creeley” series that had been published as the first section of Spicer’s book The Heads of the Town up to the Aether. As Killian writes in his afterword, “The first poem in this series saw print—in the “Spicer issue” of Manroot—only because Lew Ellingham had copied it onto a brown paper bag after Spicer pasted it on the wall of Gino & Carlo’s bar. That it had any successors few guessed or knew.”

The entire series is here published for the first time, illustrated with reproductions of seven of the collages that Herndon made as part of the project. This is one of her artist’s copies, a handful of which remained in her library at the time of her death in May 2020.

About Passages Bookshop

Passages Bookshop stocks fine, rare, and unusual books and graphic art, with a concentration on modern and contemporary literature and art (particularly poetry and the avant-garde), artist's books, fine printing, and the book arts. The successor to New York City's Bridge Bookshop (late 1980s), Passages opened in Albuquerque in 1994 and relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1997. In November of 2015 we moved to a new retail shop and gallery centrally located in Portland's east side, two blocks north of the convention center, where we are typically open Thursday through Saturday from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, as well as by appointment or chance.
