The Golliwogg's Bicycle Club

by Upton, Bertha; illustrated by Florence K. Upton

Condition: Good

31 full page colour illustrations with numerous other sepia illustrations within the text. Another charming story about the Golliwogg's adventures with his dutch peg doll friends Peggy, Weg, Meg, Sarah Jane and the dinky little Midget. This tale is about their travels around the world on homemade bicycles and the disasters that befall them. This is the 2nd in a 13 book series of golliwogg books written by mother Bertha and illustrated by daughter Florence (1873-1922) between 1896 - 1909. The word Golliwogg, which is no longer considered a socially acceptable word, originated from these books and is listed in the dictionary. Upton illustrated other children's books (see the Vege-men's Revenge for example) and was an accomplished artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, London. 220x285 mm. 64pp. This copy has been rebound in a new dark blue cloth binding with a facsimile front cover illustration paste down [taken from the first edition]. Last page is facsimile replacement [taken from first edition]. First three pages creased. Some browning and marks to frontispiece and last [original] page, all other pages fresh and bright.
