Loew's Grand Theatre, originally DeGive's Grand Opera House, was a theater from 1893-1978 at the corner of Peachtree and Forsyth Streets in downtown Atlanta, Georgia and most famous for the opening of Mitchell's classic. Many epic films premiered at the opulent theatre including Ben Hur, Doctor Zhivago, and Singin' In The Rain. About 300,000 people came out for the premiere on December 15, 1939. It was the climax of three days of festivities, which included a parade of limousines featuring stars from the film, receptions, thousands of Confederate flags and a costume ball. The governor of Georgia, declared December 15 a state holiday. The estimated three hundred thousand residents and visitors to Atlanta lined the streets for up to seven miles to watch a procession of limousines bring Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Clark Gable and others from the airport.
