The uncommon autograph of George Meredith (1828-1909), novelist and poet. “Unfortunately our old Sylvia has departed for Paris, & the cookery shows it, as the light gone out of the Camp.” His correspondent is Tom Taylor (1817-80), critic, dramatist and editor of Punch, later to be the subject of one of Meredith’s poems, To A Friend Lost.
