London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1934. First edition, and first printing other than when issued as a supplement to 'The British Weekly'. With four full-page illustrations by "B.P." [Bip Pares] printed in black and with chapter headings decorated in blue. 8vo, publisher's original bright blue cloth, the upper cover and spine gilt lettered, endpapers decorated in blue, and in the original dustjacket. The jacket with the extra printed paper wraparound announcing the book being chosen as the Evening Standard Book of the Month (but not a book-club issue). 128 pp. A very pleasing and attractive copy, the book is quite fine indeed, the blue cloth bright with vivid gilt, the textblock with a bit of the usual foxing in a few places, the edges with some of the usual spotting, the white dustjacket with a bit of mellowing and age evidence but still very attractive and complete, a cellotape repair to the verso, the very scarce and seldom seen Evening Standard announcement wrap-around still in nice condition with a bit of age evidence. FIRST EDITION IN DUSTWRAPPER AND AN UNCOMMONLY NICE COPY OF THIS PERENNIAL FAVORITE. GOOD-BYE MR. CHIPS is "a tender and gentle story as warming to the heart and a nourishing to the spirit as any I can remember... It is a public duty and no small pleasure to pass word along from house to house when anyone gives the world something as deeply satisfying as 'GOOD-BYE, MR. CHIPS!'" - Alexander Woollcott in The New Yorker. MR. CHIPS is also one of the greatest 'school-days' stories and was made into highly memorable films in 1939 and 1969, the later starring Peter O'Toole.

London and Paris: By Hand, 1970. 4 individual letters, three in quarto and one in octavo , the four letters total eight pages of written correspondence and include the envelopes for each of the letters. All of the letters are in fine condition and very well preserved. A FINE COLLECTION OF FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY THE POET, NOVELIST AND ESSAYIST STEPHEN SPENDER. Written to Thomas Dotton, Mr. Spender's correspondence has to do with the renting of Mr. Dotton's home in Switzerland and with occasional literary matters including Spender's reading of Rilke as well as other activities during the time period. Spender was discovered by T.S. Eliot, an editor at Faber & Faber, in 1933. His early poetry, notably Poems (1933), was often inspired by social protest. Living in Vienna, he further expressed his convictions in Forward from Liberalism. At the Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris, which had published the first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses, historic figures made rare… Read More

IN THE SCARCE FIRST ISSUE DUSTJACKET, with the $2.50 price and with “Recent Fiction” on the back cover. 301pp. A fine copy, pristine and unused, the varnished black cloth shiny and fresh with only a tiny amount of marking that is common to the varnish and almost no wear whatsoever, the text clean and solid and fresh. The jacket, which is quite scarce, is still very bright and attractive. The front and rear panels of the dustjacket are in quite excellent condition, bright, clean and complete, the spine panel shows a bit of evidence of shelving at the foot, and a bit of wear at the head, but this is a very pleasing and attractive copy of an important book. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
