New York: John Lane, 1915. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/no jacket. 1915, First American edition of Ford Madox Hueffer's classic novel. Hardcover, original green cloth, gilt titles and design on front board. 294 pp., plus a single leaf of ads, as called for in this American issue. Very Good, no dust jacket. Slight cocking to the spine; extremities bumped; light fraying to the spine ends; gilt on spine titles has competed rubbed off, but only mild loss to the gilt on the front board; interior fresh, with clean and unmarked contents. Front inner hinge has been discretely strengthened. Bookplate of the former owner, Peter Beilenson, the proprietor of the Peter Pauper Press, is affixed to the front pastedown. A solid copy of one of the most important works of 20th-century fiction.
