No owner inscrptn,no dw/dj - as issued? and no price present,as a Book Club issue.Separate monochrome photographic rainy night-time city street scenes to front+back,paper-covered card boards with white lettering to both the front and to a slightly faded spine; with negligible shelf-wear; all corner tips minimally bumped and rubbed with minimal paper loss.Complete, attached spine with minor faults to head+foot of same: head with gently pulling resulting in two small splits/closed tears - letters unaffected, foot with an approx. 1cm paper split and curling to front-facing gutter - without loss and also without affecting the letters. All edges lightly aged/toned with some minimal.sporadic foxing/ spotting; contents bright, tight, solid and clean apart from some sporadic page-edge foxing spots.Off-set foxing and spotting to half-title and its reverse, and a much lesser degree to title page, similar foxing to rear pastedown and the reverse of last page and the penultimate page too. No dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, could appear unread, apart from my own collation.UK,12mo HB,1st edn thus,7-317pp [paginated] includes author's introduction, six connected stories; plus [unapginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication with contents list/table to its reverse, and individual story's title separator pages. .
Six loosely interconnected character sketches that tell the story of the people Isherwood knew in Berlin prior to the rise of Hitler. The basis for the 1972 musical film 'Cabaret' starring Liza Minnelli.Contains 'A Berlin Diary' (Autumn 1930),'Sally Bowles' - which was originally published as a separate volume by same publisher (Hogarth),'On Ruegen Island' (Summer 1931),'The Nowaks','The Landauers',and 'A Berlin Diary' (Winter 1932-3).
The First 'Berlin Dairy' (Autumn 1930),along with 'The Nowaks' and 'The Landauers',have already appeared in John Lehmann's 'New Writing'..
The six pieces contained in this volume form a roughly continuous narrative. They are the only existing fragments of what was originally planned as a huge episodic novel of pre-Hitler Berlin.

Synopsis

Goodbye to Berlin is a short novel by Christopher Isherwood. It is often published together with Mr. Norris Changes Trains in a collection called The Berlin Stories. The novel, a semiautobiographical account of Isherwood's time in 1930s Berlin, describes pre-Nazi Germany and the people he met. It is episodic, dealing as it does with a large cast over a period of several years from late 1930 to early 1933. It is written as a connected series of six short stories and novellas.
