Original photograph - Schalekamp, J.M. (1844-1912). Gorinchem. Grote Haven. (Appeldijk). Amsterdam, J.M. Schalekamp, ca. 1890-1900. ca. 22.5 x 16 cm.

Very rare original photograph by Johan Marinus Schalekamp (1844-1912), one of a group of original photographs which were used to make a picture postcard. We have traced some of the executed picture postcards, greatly reduced images of our original photographs. Schalekamp was one of the largest (possibly even the first) publishers of Dutch topographical picture postcards around 1900. He was active in Haarlem (1870-1879); Amsterdam (1881-1893) and Buiksloot (near Amsterdam, 1893-1912). He had a photographic studio, a (photo)lithographic and book printing office from 1893 onwards. Not only did he print his own picture postcards and books, but he also worked for other publishers.

Very good copy. Provenance: Bought by a Dutch collector of photography in the 1960s, beginning of 1970s. Titled in pencil on verso. RKD; Wachlin 2011, Vol. 2, p. 517 (as: Schalenkamp, Johan Marinus).

Description:
Two 1940's volumes of the annual series of collections of the world's best pictorial photographic work, compiled by the editors and staff of "The Photogram,". It was published from 1895 to 1962. Each issue was illustrated with high quality reproductions and tipped-in plates, and included extensive introductory narratives and several pages of period advertisements. The editors and publishers changed over the years. This is generally considered the the longest running and most prestigious photo annual of its time.1941 - Softcover. Tan oversize wrappers with black and green titles on spine and front cover. Slight edge wear and slight soiling on the spine, but the binding overall is tight and sound, unusual for an 80+ year old copy. No marks or damage to the text and pictures at all. The selection of photos appears to favor nudes and pastoral scenes, which were probably welcome distractions from the ordeal of WWII.1949- Softcover. Teal cloth wrappers with blue and gilt titles on spine and front… Read More
