George Bell and Sons, London, 1848. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Two matching volumes in contemporary binding of dark red half leather with gilt decoration and lettering and raised bands on spine. Faded dark red covers, leather is well worn on corners and rubbed on spine ends and joints. Binding on both volumes is sound but with some splitting of paper over interior hinges. Clean dark red marbled end-papers and plain free front end-papers (Volume II has small area of loss on leading edge of free end-paper). Both volumes have chromolithographic decorated title pages and both have a plain title in red and black. All titles have foxing. Text to prelims is in red and black and framed in red, there is light foxing to prelims. Volume I was published in 1848 whereas Volume II was published in 1850. Most plates are dated and the earliest date found on a plate is 1846. Volume I contains 103 plates, most are black and white however 18 are chromolithographic plates with bright colour and gilt. Volume II contains 104 plates (two of which are in the prelims and numbered separately), 23 of these are in colour. Plates are foxed to a varying degree, some are not foxed at all, many only lightly. The black and white plates in general have more foxing than the coloured. Coloured plates only have light and occasional foxing which is mostly in the margins.
