Philadelphia.: George R. Graham.. 1844.. TWO VOLUMES BOUND IN ONE. Profusely illustrated with color and black and white engravings (including mezzotints) such as two fashion plates with hand-color, two fashion plates uncolored, one color design, one color plate of a peacock. Color marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, iv+296+iv+295pp, 10 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches, decorative gilt embossed leather boards and spine (hardbound). Previous owner's small label to front paste-down, areas of light wear and rubbing to leather boards, scattered foxing and spotting but overall very good, clean and tight condition in a most handsome gilt binding. Of particular interest are two contributions by Edgar Allan Poe, his poem Dream-Land, and his review of the poem Orion by R.H. Horne. There is an engraving of "The Elkhorn Pyramid" by Karl Bodmer. An interesting view into the home and intellectual life of mid 19th century American, with fashion illustrations, poetry, literature, plus music for various songs. This handsomely bound copy would make a fine addition to any library. .

Very good to near fine overall.. Engravings, some colored. The July through December 1843 issues of Graham's Magazine, of which Edgar Allan Poe had recently been editor. This volume contains three reviews by Poe, including his review of James Fenimore Cooper's historical novel, "Wyandotté." <br /> <br /> It was while editor of Graham's that Poe developed his bitingly sarcastic style of literary criticism, and that style is full flower here. Not surprisingly, Cooper gets the least amount of acid from Poe's pen.<br /> <br /> Also included in this volume are four poems by a young poet named Elizabeth B. Barrett.
