Philadelphia.: George R. Graham.. Volumes XXVI - XXVII ( XXVII - XXVIII).. 1845.. Hardcover volume, 10 x 6 ¼ inches; illustrated throughout with black and white steel engravings and wood-engravings; [13]-84 pp. January thru June; 282 pp. July thru December. Front cover held by a thread to text block; contents securely bound; missing from the bound volume are the endpapers, title page and first pages (January issue begins on p. 13.), the last page of the second volume and the color fashion plates. Considerable foxing, toning and staining. A generous overall description would be: "profoundly well-used" - sold with all faults. These two six-month volumes bound as one are marked in the contents as volumes XXVII and XXVIII, but are actually volumes XXVI and XXVII (see the Hathiway Trust digitised record of the University of Michigan copies). This volume is noteworthy for the portrait frontispiece of Edgar Allan Poe as well as James Russell Lowell's profile of the author, both in the February issue. The volume also contains two short stories authored by Poe, "The Imp of the Perverse" (July) and "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether" (November). Also of great interest are the 6 engravings of Native Americans after Karl Bodmer. These are Blackfoot Indians on Horseback (2 copies); Dakota Woman and Assinboine Girl; Tower Rock on the Mississippi; Mandan Warrior; and Indians Hunting the Bison. All in good or good-minus condition, with occasional spotting in margins. (Problematic is the fact that the titles are very faintly printed beneath the image. The images themselves are quite strong.)There is text in Parts One and Two of the volume discussing the various Bodmer prints, not necessarily found in close proximity to the print itself or titled similarly. In the Jan./June segment p 45 there is a discussion of Mandan Chief and also Indians Horse-Racing (Mandan Chief plate is not present but there are two copies of the Horse-Racing ); p. 92 and continuing on 136 is The Blackfeet Parts 1 and 2; p. 122 contains text for Dakota Woman and Assiniboine Girl. In the July/December segment, text for Grand Tower Rock is on p. 124; text for Mandan in Dog Dance Costume is on p. 170; text for Indians Hunting the Bison is on p. 236. The Bodmer plates and the Poe texts and portrait are definitely the highlights of the volume. .
