London: William Cobbett. This is a Very Good Copy of this book rebound in grey cloth boards,with new spine label in type to the spine.Early edition of this work by William Cobbett Son of a farmer and innkeeper, Cobbett joined the army when he was 21 but had to flee to America in 1791 after making accusations of military corruption. There he was stung into action in 1794 by the visit of Joseph Priestley, the scientist and radical. Convinced that Priestley was a traitor, Cobbett wrote the pamphlet that launched his journalistic career. For the next six years he published 12 volumes of diatribes against American democracy, his style securing him many enemies and the nickname 'Peter Porcupine'. After paying a heavy fine in a libel judgement, Cobbett returned to England in 1800.The book has one previous ownership name unusually to the fore-edge of the book,with various ink annotations set within margins to certain leaves,early edition,small 8vo unpaginated . Very Good. Hardcover. Early Edition. 1831.
