About This Item

London: Bernard Quaritch. Printed by John Strangeways., 1868. Third Edition. Cloth. Very Good Minus. Folio, 34.5 by 24.5 cm. 157 pp of text. 112 plates. A cornerstone work on ornament, a chromolithographic masterpiece as well. Essential for any library of the decorative arts. Notable contributions by J. B. Waring, J.O. Westwood, Christopher Dresser, M. Digby Wyatt, among others. Jones was himself a moving force behind the London Exposition of 1851 (the Crystal Palace Exposition) and this work goes hand in hand with that inasmuch as it is an attempt to encyclopedize ornamental work across time periods and cultures. Intended as a reference, the work also functions fabulously as pure display artwork, as the brilliant chromolithographs are a feast for the eye. Condition: rebacked, with most of original gilt decorated and lettered spine preserved and mounted onto the spine cloth. Original binding elsewhere with some bleached spots, scratches, etc. but still better than passable copy of this binding. Moderate age toning around perimeters of pages. Chromolithographic illustrations remain generally bright. Minor scattered foxing.
