Very Good Minus, edges rubbed, gilt at spine dulled yet sttill legible, title and front end pages starting to separate from text block, soiling and a few pages with marginal notations and underlining in pencil. George H. Thompson served in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry, serving as a Captain until June 24th, 1864, when he was promoted to Major, a rank he carried until the end of the war. The 3rd saw action at Antietam, Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness, and Cold Harbor among many others, and there are monuments at Antietam and Gettysburg to the regiment... Fifth Edition. Cloth. OCLC shows no holdings for this order. Signed in type: Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, Andrew Johnson, President and W. Hunter, Acting Secretary of State. Announcement of the order by President Johnson to end the naval blockade against foreign commerce, except in the ports of Galveston, Lasalle, Brazos de Santiago (Port Isabel) and Brownsville, Texas. "All such offenders will be held and dealt with as pirates." Although Lee had surrendered in April 1865, the Confederate armies in Texas had not surrendered, hence the U. S. naval blockade on Texas ports needed to be maintained.

[[Slavery] [African American] Thomas Taylor. Autograph Letter, Signed. [Columbus, Texas?]: January 7, 1861. Handwritten letter on gray lined paper. 20 x 23 cm. Discoloration and small splits at old folds. Writing is legible.
Mr. Taylor writes to a friend passing on word that "Mr. Shropshire requested me to let you know that he wishes the negro hire settled." Says Mr. Shropshire will be here a few days and mentions he may be in Lagrange today. There is a town named La Grange in Texas and there was a prominent slave and plantation owner named Shropshire in nearby Columbus, Texas. John Samuel Shropshire moved to Texas in 1854 and settled in Columbus, Colorado County. In 1860 Shropshire owned sixty-one slaves and operated a 750-acre plantation. - Handbook of Texas. It was common for slavers to hire out the enslaved persons, as shown in this letter on the eve of the Civil War.

Los Angeles, California, 1903; 2 1/2" x 7" satin ribbon badge from the G.A.R. Camp Fire at Los Angeles August 26, 1903, previously belonging to Civil War Colonel E.F.C. Klokke (1834-1914) of the 24th Illinois Volunteers. Klokke was an officer in the Cumberland Department of the newly formed Signal Corps and a veteran of the Battle Of Shiloh. In 1867 he was elected Clerk of the Cook County Illinois Superior Court and held that office for a number years before moving to Los Angeles, where he built a landmark Victorian home at 2105 South Figueroa and soon established himself as a prominent citizen. Accompanying the badge are two 2 3/4" x 6" red satin ribbons. The text of the first reads, "Col. E.F.C. Klokke, Compliments of Mr. & Mrs. Wiley Wells, Saturday, January 27th, 1888."
