Early edition. Dated using the British Library. Illustrated with twenty-three plates printed in oil colours. Collated missing frontispiece. Including: Sing a Song o' Sixpence, The Robin's Christmas Eve, Robin Hood & his Merry Men, and The Sea Side. Written by Laura Valentine, under the pen name Aunt Louisa, a Victorian English writer known for her children's literary series. Illustrated by Kronheim and Dalziels. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, worn with bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Some loss to the cloth on the spine. Internally, firmly bound. FIRST EDITION (No. 17 in list of 17 on lower cover), circa 1868, small 4to, 266 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, pink card covers colour decorated, adverts to lower cover. 6 colour plates printed by Kronheim and Co., 6 pages of story in quatrains, all printed 1 side only. 1 of 4 brave St Bernard dogs meets his death on a rescue mission Christmas eve in the mountains with the monks. Spine expertly repaired, restitched, top corner of upper cover slightly scuffed, margins slightly fingermarked, occasional slight foxing. Contents nice. A very good copy. Osborne I,84. FIRST EDITION circa 1867 (no titles on adverts later than 1866, inscribed Dec. 25th 1868), 280 x 190 mm, 11 x 7½ inches, cloth backed pale yellow boards, repeat illustration on upper cover, engraved frontispiece with 2 images and 19 large charming engraved illustrations (uncoloured) all of sweet children, happy, sad, shy, cross, reading etc., each with descriptive verse below, printed 1 side only. Boards a bit rubbed, lightly soiled and marked, corners worn and rounded, small chip to surface and small red stain to lower cover, small light stain to upper cover at lower edge, spine slightly worn at head and tail with tiny nicks to cloth, neat inscription on front endpaper, contents otherwise bright and clean. London, Frederick Warne & Co., (1880).. Circa 1880, dated from adverts, small 4to, 266 x 230 mm, 10½ x 9 inches, pink card covers colour decorated, adverts on lower cover. 4 colour plates and 1 splendid double page colour plate printed by Kronheim and Co., 6 pages of large print verses. Little girl receives gifts from family, welcomes little guests, they dance (centrefold), have a splendid supper and then we see the 'cloaking and shawling' in the hall. Neatly restitched long ago, old internal repair to spine, spine worn on the outside, tiny crease to lower corner of upper cover, margins slightly foxed and slightly fingermarked, 10 mm (½") closed tear to 1 fore-edge with old repair. A good plus copy. Mrs Valentine was the general editor of Warne's publishing house and possibly wrote most of the verses for the Aunt Louisa series of books.
