About This Item

First Edition/First Printing with the correct statement on the copyright page with no mention of subsequent printings; in a first issue dust jacket with the first edition slug and price intact of $2.75. In publisher's tan cloth with spine titles in purple and with pictorial design extending across the lower portion of both covers and spine, with Battle Hymn of the Republic printed on the endpapers. A Near Fine book in a Good dust jacket. An outstanding copy of this classic work of 20th century literature, multiple award winner, and basis for the excellent movie. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding, vibrant design and lettering over tan boards, and crisp, white pages; the book does show some mild darkening to the spine and spine edges, else fine. Housed in a clean and bright, original, good dust jacket that shows an overall darkening, rubbing and chipping to the spine ends with very minimal loss of material, a small puncture type tear to the mid spine, and separation of the flap folds from the jacket body (again with no loss of material). Overall, a handsome copy that profiles and shows well; a must have for the 20th century literature collector! Not ex-library and no repair has been performed. In archival protection and will ship in a sturdy box.

Synopsis

John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath stands as a pivotal piece of American literature. The story follows the Joad family (and thousands of others) as they are driven from the Oklahoma farm where they are sharecroppers during the Great Depression. The drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries send them searching for dignity and honest work in the bountiful state of California. The novel earned Steinbeck the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1940, and inspired the classic film of the same name the same year. The film starred Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, and Steinbeck's words and ideas shine through that medium. In 1962, Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for the body of his work, and The Grapes of Wrath stands as his most recognized and esteemed book. -
