([Johannesburg]: Central News Agency, 1959). 4to; original green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, and with gilt grass inflorescence device to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xvi + 771, incl. index; colour plates; line drawings and distribution maps in text; several tables, incl. folding. Dustwrapper somewhat edgeworn, with touch of damp-staining to tail of spine panel; tape marks to flaps; gift inscription to verso of front free endpaper, and earlier owner's name signed on half-title; binding rather slack; edges browned; occasional light foxing. Good condition. Landmark work on South African grasses and pasture science: a generation of farmers and botanists relied on its contents. The outstanding plates are a key feature of the book. Part 1, 'A Guide to the Identification of Grasses in South Africa', is by Lucy K. A. Chippindall, and Part 2, 'Pasture Management in South Africa', is by Prof. J. D. Scott, Prof. J. J. Theron, D. Meredith, and others. .
