New York, Aladdin Books, c1954.. Hard Cover. 192 p. : illus. ; 21 cm. This historical novel for juveniles is about the persecution of Quakers in Massachusetts in the 1650's. For Slater Brown it had implications because he, with E.E. CUMMINGS, had been detained in the "enormous room" by the French on dubious gronds and in 1953 when this was written, Joseph McCarthy and the Republicans were fanning the same flames that burned books in Boston 300 years before. So both Brown and Kredel, who had fled Nazi Germany, knew the perils of tyranny and used this historical tale to convey the danger to young Americans. Stock# 102,607.
