Covers from Dalmatia east to the Sea of Marmara and south to Cythera or Kithira, Incredibly detailed, the map notes several important cities and towns, lakes, rivers, and beautifully rendered topography. The map identifies several ancient locales throughout. In good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold. Some offsetting and minor foxing. <br><br>The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.<br><br>Based on the earlier plates by Nicolas Sanson (1600 - 1667), who is considered the founder of the French school of cartography. In reaction to the prevailing trend of Dutch lavishness, Sanson favored minimal details, focusing rather on accurate cartography than ornament. Hard to find.<br/><br/>
