The great strike of 1888 was the most serious labor conflict ever experienced by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, and probably the hardest fight and the worst defeat in the history of the two brotherhoods which took part in it. The Burlington system of railroads was one of the great transportation networks of the 19th Century, operating about 6,000 miles of line in 1888, the year of the great strike.
