[Gold Mining] [Utah] [Photography] Simon Bamberger. Three Cabinet Cards of Bamberger Delamar Gold Mines Co. [Delamar, Nevada?] [Photographer not identified][Circa 1902-1909] Three photographs 9.5 x 12.2 cm mounted on cards 13.5 x 15.7 cm. Very good.
Simon Bamberger was a Utah entrepreneur who was the fourth Governor of the State of Utah and the first non-Mormon. He was involved in hotels, railroads and mining. In 1902 Bamberger acquired the gold mining properties in Delamar, Nevada. After sinking a new shaft completed in 1906, the mine closed in 1909. These photographs show the milling of timbers for the mine and are identified by handwritten notes on the back: "De Lamar, Nevada. Interior of Bamberger De Lamar Gold Mines Co.'s sawmill. Here all the timber is framed for the mine. The timber is used to support the earth above the timber." Goupil, Paris, 1880; Woodburytype photograph by Ferdinand Mulnier of eminent sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), renowned for his design, in 1878, of the Statue of Liberty. An equally accomplished painter, Bartholdi nevertheless chose to work under the pseudonym "Amilcar Hasenfratz" when creating his popular paintings of Egyptian themes, fearing they might detract from his fame as a sculptor. Photo measures approximately 3 1/2" x 5", mounted on the first of twelve 11" x 14" leaves of biographical and critical text by Charles Lefevbre. Additionally laid in is a large 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" photo, mounted on 11" x 14" card, of the Bartholdi sculpture "Rouget de Lisle." All text in French. From the 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of leading figures from the arts and sciences, published in Paris by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. Fine condition.

Parkinson Library & Research Center (The World's Source for American Circus History), the woman in this photograph is identified as her circus colleague Cilly Feindt (Photograph CWi 3182). Friedel Luciana Paster's obituary in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 page 6B, entitled "Horse Trainer was a star of Royal Lipizzan Show," provided several biographical detail: "Friedel's entire life revolved around her beloved horses," said former circus performer and friend Rebecca Nock Brodeur of Bradenton. "She trained at the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna and was in her first horse show when she was 12. Guthrie area Oklahoma c. 1908. Central OK near the Cimmaron[sic] River." Photograph measures 6 x 8 inches and mount measures 9 ¾ x 11 ¼ inches. Photograph has moderate yellowing; mount has moderate creasing and sticker residue on verso. Overall very good. This image depicts a large group with their rifles and at least four dead coyotes. It looks like the whole town came out for the hunt with men, women and children pictured. .
