Description:
Viking Press, New York, 1935; First Edition; tall 8vo, 154 pages; red cloth; illustrated. Charles G. Finney’s first novel, a bizarre fantasy about a traveling circus that suddenly appears in the remote desert town of Abalone, Arizona carrying a load of extraordinary creatures overseen by a mysterious Chinaman. Winner of Best Book Of The Year at the first National Book Awards in 1935 and later adapted to the screen by Charles Beaumont and Ben Hecht for the 1964 MGM film "The Seven Faces Of Dr. Lao." It has been cited as a creative influence by numerous fantasy writers including Ray Bradbury, who expressed the greatest admiration for it. Author Charles Grandison Finney (1905-1984) revealed in his memoirs that the idea for "Dr.Lao" was conceived while he was stationed with the U.S. infantry in China from 1927-1929. After discharge, Finney moved to Tucson, Arizona where he took a job as journalist for the Arizona Daily Star, where remained for forty years, and the fictional…

Description:
Edinburgh: Canongate, 1985. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. First thus; limited "definitive" edition. No. 195 of one thousand copies signed and numbered by Gray on the front free endpaper. Octavo (9.5 x 6.5 in.), 560pp., black textured paper boards, gilt-stamped on boards and spine, in dust jacket. Gray's first book, over which he labored intermittently for more than two decades before finally seeing it through to publication in 1981. Something of a cult classic, though increasingly recognized as not only Gray's masterpiece but one of the 20th century's most impressive feats of the imagination. A near fine copy, with a ½ x ¼ in. oval moisture stain to textblock top, light wear at heel of spine, and a smudge of shelf soiling to the bottom tip of textblock. Unclipped "£15" jacket also near fine, with just mild sunning to spine. Quite handsome.

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
