A collection of 43 very fine, early/mid 19th century, comparatively large (approximately 285 x 235 mm), original watercolour studies of different species of South African Ericas, each autographed with the species name. Housed in a red straight-grained morocco case with closing flap and the words "In Memoriam Madre Mia" (in memory of my mother). While there is no reference to the originator of these studies, they are executed in a style close to that used by Henry C. Andrews for his Monograph on the Genus Erica (1804-1812). The present watercolours do not correspond directly to those but the composition is similiar and it is possible they were executed by Andrews in connection with the publication. Notwithstanding, they are highly accomplished, reminiscent of the best botanical artists of the day. Munich: J. F. Schreiber & Deutsche Hochbild-Gesellschaft, c. 1920s. Painted plaster anatomical relief display in wooden frame (240 x 302 mm). Printed paper label to the rear. Housed in the original box with the stamp of the publisher's archive and two handwritten labels - one giving the name of the display and the other reading "F22". Also with the original tissue-covered cotton insert to protect the relief. Some minor spots and scuffs to the frame. Slight damage to the paper backing of the frame not affecting the its integrity. Some wear to the box. Excellent condition. Uncommon, early-20th century anatomical relief of the European lizard species Lacerta agilis (the sand lizard, here called the fence lizard). The publisher's archive copy, in excellent condition in the original box. London: Printed for the author and sold by John Gray, 1742 A fair copy of the 1st edition in later half calf binding with 7 plates. A fascinating read today, being an account of a mixture of mythical and real animals - including descriptions of dragons. The binding is in good to very good condition with gilt titles and gilt ruled lines to spine and lightly marbled boards. There is some light scuffing and wear. There is an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown with the motto 'durum sed fortissimum' and the name 'Stones' to the top. The endpapers are also newer but the paper has been chosen to match the rest of the volume. Contents: title; dedication pp iii-v; to the reader pp vi-vii; directions to binder and errata 1p; list of subscribers ix-xxiii; text pt I pp 1-50; Pt II pp 51-166 with 7 plates; Part III pp 167-240; index 12 pp. With decorative head and tailpieces. Exotic animals like the lion and the hippopotamus, which he drew from books, may be unconvincing, but he never fails with dogs, sheep, and cats, which he drew from life."
