"There is something about shipwrecks that compels attention; you must be blasé, indeed, not to feel a quickening of interest as you read the banner headlines which herald some drama of the seas. The easy, the facile, explanation is that we feel a sense of self-satisfaction when reading of the troubles which beset others; but there is more to it than that. In every shipwreck, men (and sometimes women) are exposed to extreme danger, and often to fantastic hardship. How did they act in the circumstances, and what became of them? These are the fascinating questions which shipwrecks pose. … No two of the shipwrecks described in this volume are alike; they vary in location, and in time (1554 to 1966); and even where the problems or locations, at first sight, appear similar, the outcome is often startlingly different. But all have this in common - they are the stories of men clinging stubbornly to life, pushed to the ultimate in the battle for survival. … So choose your story, and learn what others have suffered. Then, with the wisdom of hindsight, decide what you would have done, had you been shipwrecked off the coast of Southern Africa." .
