In a mysterious village in the desert on the West Bank of the Thebes, lives a small group of craftsmen whose task is to excavate and decorate the splendid tombs of the pharaohs. Its name is The Place of Truth. Meanwhile, at Pi-Ramses, the capital, one ruler follows another in quick succession - after Ramses the Great came Merenptah; and now his successor Seti II is in open conflict with his own son Amenmes, who craves power. Despite this political unrest, the Place of Truth, under the leadership and protection of Nefer and his wife Ubekhet - the 'Wise Woman' - should remain a place of peace and harmony. But panic has gripped the inhabitants and the situation is going from bad to worse in the face of mounting catastrophe. Drinking water is poisoned, food is contaminated, and there have been several attempts by evildoers to scale the walls of the Place of Truth, which have been thwarted thanks to the courage of Paneb the Ardent. Description:
Philadelphia: Russell & Creamer, 1883. Original printed wrappers [light soil] and staples. 30 clean pages. Very Good plus. This is a scarce prospectus for the Company, a Wisconsin corporation formed in 1881 with plans to use the water power of the River. The rapids of the St. Louis River, near Duluth, furnish "one of the greatest of all the available water powers of the world." Indeed, "the water power of the Mississippi, at its one place of fall, is so much less in available power than the fall of the St. Louis River." When fully developed, the area around Duluth will be preferable to Chicago for "the great markets of the East." Much material is presented on the opportunities for development of the lumber trade, and available natural resources. Expenses, data on area commerce, and material on commerical opportunities are presented. FIRST EDITION. 515 NUC 0038380 [2]. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Soliday, Graff.
