About This Item

New York: Scribner and Welford, 743 & 745 Broadway, [1889]. 12mo. 384 pp., plus 32 pp. publisher’s catalogue. Frontisp., 11 plates, 1 double-page colour map. Olive-green pictorial publisher’s cloth over beveled boards, cover arrt illustration of Viking helm, spears, shields, and mountains, decorative spine, gilt & black lettering (minor edgewear, rubbing, slight bumping to corners), still VG copy. First edition of this scarce recounting of the famed Icelandic Saga of Grettir the Strong, considered one of the finest in Scandinavian Sagas, and the Icelandic version of the Beowulf Legend set in the 10th century. This work tells of desperate feats, fighting beserkers, and with the spirit of Glam, as well as an excellent account of Icelandic folkways and culture. These are early illustrations by Michael Zeno Diemer (1867-1939) who studied at the Academy in Munich under Gabriel von Gackl and Alexander von Liezen-Mayer, and was especially well-knwon for his watercolours of the Alps.
