This set is beautifully bound in the publisher's uncommon half tan calf with marbled boards and end papers. Condition is excellent. Occupies 21 inches (53 cm) on the shelf. The original twenty-four numbered parts in the original yellow wrappers in publisher's crushed morocco solander case. Illustrated yellow paper covers, with the fourty-eight etched plates and woodcut vignettes in the text, all after drawings by the author; the original yellow pictorial wrappers a little soiled and frayed, otherwise very good condition.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. Contents clean and tight, original patterned end papers to both front and back, somewhat browned also affecting the half-title page, paper to front hinge partially cracked but expertly repaired, contemporary pencil name and address to head of half-title page. A very good copy. A very scarce book - the first edition of the first novel of Anthony Hope (Hawkins) and paid for by Hope. He writes of it in his autobiography "I had already published one novel - on commission, at my own expense; it cost me fifty pounds, and the royalties amounted to thirteen" Few copies seem to have survived and Copac only list two British libraires with copies..

In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains."
