About This Item

Manitou , CO: Paul Goerke & Son. Good. Boudoir Card. Late 19th century albumen boudoir cabinet card. No publication date, likely produced circa 1890 (hmdb.org). Brown mount measures approximately 8.75 x 5.75 inches and the photo measures about 7.5 x 4.5 inches. The number “3844” appears in the negative. The verso details pricing for duplicate pictures. It also notes that this is a “Grade B” photo as opposed to the higher quality “Grade A” option. Mount has chipping to edges that impacts upper corners but not the image; slight inward curve. Image is partially washed out, slightly discolored from glue that attaches it to the mount, and has a small abrasion. Some writing in pencil on verso. Overall, good condition. In the 1890s, photographer Paul Goerke purchased the land around Balanced Rock in Colorado’s Garden of the Gods. Goerke and his son then began charging tourists 25 cents to have their photo taken in front of the landmark, even offering burros to be used as props. As personal cameras became more available, the Goerkes started charging admission just to see the precariously perched boulder. In 1932, the city of Colorado Springs purchased the property and turned it into a public park. This image shows five men, four on burros, posed in front of Balanced Rock. All are dressed in nice suits and one holds a camera. ; B&W Photograph .
