This edition is edited, and with some additional content, by Carl Christian Gmelin (1762 - 1837; A German botanist, and brother to engraver Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin (1760 - 1820). Pp: [i-v] vi - xiii [9] 1-186 + 27 fold out plates. Each hand-colored steel engraving is leaf sized and tipped to a blank bound leaf, then folded in. Rebacked with newer leather over spine and corners. Earlier green cloth over boards and original spine labels affixed. Ex-Library with small markings on paste downs, and numbers on blank verso of title page. Green cloth is a bit rubbed and soiled. Scattered light foxing, though only minimally affecting plates. A few plates show bend corners, not affecting images. Volume remains tight and plates are generally bright and clean.

London: T. Curtis, 1805. Very good +. This is a hand colored copper plate engraving. The print measures 5.5 x 9.25 inches, with a plate mark of 4.5 x 7.75. It is a beautiful decorative antique print expertly colored and beautifully composed. This particular plate has been trimmed at the rough edge. Curtis' work was the first study of British flora, and artists contributing to the opus included James Sowerby, Sydenham Teak Edwards, Francis Sansom and William Kilburn. "The Botanical Magazine; or Flower-Garden Displayed, is an illustrated publication which began in 1787. The longest running botanical magazine, it is widely referred to by the subsequent name Curtis's Botanical Magazine.
