Booklet, illustrated with single page black and white pictorial maps, 7 single page black and white maps and centrefold double page map, 140pp, 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, back and front card covers form a single pictorial map of the Pacific arena from the Chinese coast to the Gilbert Islands. Light staining to top inner edge of first pages (through page 9) and last few pages, staples have rusted and left small stains, light stamp and discoloration to front covers, overall good condition. A "guide" to the Pacific Islands for "American soldiers, sailors, and marines...This book is to help them get along in these places which formerly were not even known by name to most Americans but which are destined to become as familiar as their own backyards to hundreds of Americans..." Twelve sections cover specific islands or groups of islands the history (from way back to the events of the present ie. World War II battles), the customs, climate, you name it, in a breezily informative way, with paragraph headings such as "Why worry about them?" There is a black and white pictorial map for most sections, often with a GI or a Japanese soldier featured. The Statistical Summary lists October 1944 as the latest date for U.S. occupation. This second edition includes non-pictorial maps of smaller islands, such as Miyako-shima, along with maps of the Shanghai Area and Kyushu Island. .
