Winston-Salem, N.C.: John F. Blair, [1991]. xi, 288 pages, plus [30] pages of illustrations (photographs and three maps). Original dark blue cloth with silver spine lettering. 23.5 x 16 cm. A fine copy in very nearly fine dust jacket (minor rubbing to the jacket). FIRST EDITION. The first chapter discusses private academies in the 18th and 19th centuries and the first efforts to establish public schools. The remainder of the book is an account of the growth and administration of the public school system from 1885 to the time of publication. John E. Batchelor was himself a teacher and administrator in the Guilford County Schools. He has since worked as a consultant on school improvement and written several books including: "Race and Education in North Carolina: From Segregation to Desegregation" (2015).
