An Adventure with a scientific Gunman. By Arthur B. Reeve, Author of “The Silent Bullet,” “The Poisoned Pen,” “The Dream Doctor” And other “Craig Kennedy” and Guy “Garrick” Stories. Hearst’s International Library Co., New York, 1914. Half-tone frontispiece with tissue guard; final blank; pp.[vi]+326+[ii]; light grey-blue fine dotted-diaper ribbed cloth, pictorially blocked black, lettered white within black single-rule blocked frame on front cover, lettered and with short rule white on spine. Short tear to cloth over back joint, but no weakness, and slight wear to cloth at head and tail of spine; ownership stamp on back of frontispiece and on three lower margins; otherwise a nice copy. The author’s first novel: a rather hasty concoction consisting frequently of ideas and passages from his short stories: the first and second paragraphs on p.108, for example repeat almost word for word two paragraphs on pp.276 - 277 of ‘The Dream Doctor’. Smith, American Fiction 1901 - 1925, R-137; Hubin, p.341. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.
