Description:
Steidl/Whitney Museum of American Art, 2002. Hardcover. First edition. Fine cloth-bound flexi-cover with a light bump to one tip; no dj, as issued. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. 288 pages; 469 color illustrations; 10.75 x 9.5 inches. Michal Rovner creates photographic and video imagery that abstract familiar subjects like houses, animals, and people into ambiguous and iconic forms. She repeatedly re-photographs her images, transferring them from video to film and back again, and manipulating them digitally, to mine the space between painting and photography, reality and memory, presence and absence. This is the catalogue for an exhibit at the Whitney in 2002. Overseas sales will require extra postage for this volume.

Original photograph - Schalekamp, J.M. (1844-1912). Den Haag. Hofvijver. Amsterdam, J.M. Schalekamp, ca. 1890-1900. ca. 22.5 x 16.5 cm.
Very rare original photograph by Johan Marinus Schalekamp (1844-1912), one of a group of original photographs which were used to make a picture postcard. We have traced some of the executed picture postcards, greatly reduced images of our original photographs. Schalekamp was one of the largest (possibly even the first) publishers of Dutch topographical picture postcards around 1900. He was active in Haarlem (1870-1879); Amsterdam (1881-1893) and Buiksloot (near Amsterdam, 1893-1912). He had a photographic studio, a (photo)lithographic and book printing office from 1893 onwards. Not only did he print his own picture postcards and books, but he also worked for other publishers.
Very good copy. Provenance: Bought by a Dutch collector of photography in the 1960s, beginning of 1970s. Titled in pencil on verso. RKD; Wachlin 2011, Vol. 2, p. 517 (as: Schalenkamp, Johan Marinus).

Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are…
