Sheffield: The Company, 1910. First Edition. Hardcover. Sheffield, The Company, [circa 1910]. Large oblong quarto (approximately 270 × 370 mm), [3]-150, [2] (index, verso blank) pages with numerous illustrations (many from photographs). The index records that the missing first leaf was a frontispiece 'View of Hadfield's Works'; this copy also lacks one other leaf (pages 5-6), being the middle portion of a four-page article on 'An Interesting Old Tramway'. Later overlapping limp cloth, retaining the original flyleaves (a little chipped, with a few minor tape repairs); the title leaf has two sharp vertical creases, each with a short repair near the bottom edge; short repair to two other leaves; small blank top corner piece missing from one leaf; a few mild signs of use; overall a very presentable copy with the rubber-stamp of John Horrocks and Company, Manufacturers' Agents and Importers, Perth, Western Australia on a number of pages throughout the catalogue. 'With the adoption of electricity as the motive power on street tramways, there came sweeping changes in the designs of points and crossings.... The following pages contain full particulars of Hadfield's Latest and Most Improved Designs of Points and Crossings, and they have been supplemented with full size sections of the British Standard Tramway Rails'. The comprehensive catalogue also features the 'designing and construction of complicated lay-outs for conduit tramways, electric and cable', dock railways, and electric and steam railway crossing. The last eleven pages are devoted to 'Tramway, Railway & Contractors' Tools'. The latest date noted in the text is in the caption of a group photograph taken on 20 July 1909; an earlier photograph, taken on 6 May 1907, records a 'Visit of Sir William Lyne (Australian Minister) and Friends to the East Hecla Works'.
