A Handbook to the Order Lepidoptera. Part I. Butterflies Vol I

by W F Kirby; R Bowdler Sharpe [editor]

Condition: Good/N

London : W H ALLEN AND CO., LIMITED,, 1894 A good copy in the traditional Allen's Naturalist's Library binding with 35 colour printed plates and 2 plain plates. An interesting copy because it sets out the scheme for the remainder of the Library which was originally intended to be as extensive as Jardine's Naturalist's Library some 60 years earlier. Lepidoptera were supposed to cover 4 volumes, but in the end a fifth was needed. This first volume contains the Nymphalidae. The binding has a buckram spine with gilt label style titling, and marbled boards. There is a lot of wear to edges and corners and a little pulling and dulling to the spine. The original black endpapers are present with a little splitting part way along the join with bookblock at the front (book is currently sound). The text is largely unopened and it and the tissue-guarded plates are in very good clean condition. A press notice about the library, plans for its future and a page of Allen's other publications bound at the rear.
