About This Item

Santa Monica, California: Clover Park Press, 1995. Hardcover. As New book in an As New jacket. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not damaged. Perfect condition. 289 pages.

In the first months of 1964, five female Peace Corps Volunteers went on a journey. They moved a step at a time, from the last place to the next, 4,000 miles from Liberia across the continent and the great Sahara Desert to Algiers. This book is the story of the somewhat random intrusion of the transient selves upon each other and upon the people among whom they passed. Like the Harmattan winds that accompanied them, they moved through each place, stirring it a little, taking a part of it, and leaving a part of ourselves behind. It was a period of hopefulness for them and for the young African nations they visitied. Colonialism was passing, everything was possible. They lived in the present, intensely, learning, testing, improvising their way. In the crucible of Africa they faced the unknown and met themselves. It was a wonderful time.
