Previous owner's inscription to front free end-paper. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout however binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Moderate tanning to spine. Gilt lettering is darkened. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains.

At first harshly received by the critics, "Harold" was withheld from production and not publicly staged until over fifty years later, in 1928. First American Edition, from author’s advanced sheets. Twelve full-page monochrome illustrations, each with guard tissue. Very Good Plus, clean, crisp, bright, binding tight, sound and square, corners sharp, all gilding brilliant. Previous owner signature in small neat hand on f.f.e.p.

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, FRS (6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poets. Tennyson's drama Harold began a revival of interest in King Harold. In an embossed green cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. There is some damage to the top and tail of the spine. Spine is sunned. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Rear hinge is tender. Pages are generally bright and clean. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and an ink inscription to the recto of front free end paper. Good
