Bound volume containing weekly issues of the newspaper for the year 1875, profusely illustrated throughout with black and white wood-engraved illustrations, 1056 pp., half leather marble-paper covered boards measuring 16 x 11 1/2 inches. The covers are very worn with some loss to the leather and the marble paper covers. Contents in overall very good clean condition, tightly bound, with tears to several pages — 20 or so. The double page illustrations are bound in (not tipped-in). Full-page wood engravings focus on topics of the day: political events at home and abroad, holidays, sporting events, Mormonism, African-American life (often condescendingly), the American West, the Chinese in San Francisco, Africa and the East (Egypt, Burma, India, Ceylon, China, etc.) Fiction in installments by Wilkie Collins, Katherine King, et al., plus poetry by Will Carleton, and full-page weekly political cartoons by Thomas Nast (with a wary eye frequently directed toward Roman Catholicism). There is a single page wood engraving by Winslow Homer "The Battle of Bunker Hill." .
