Harvard-educated Shepard taught English at Yale and Trinity College; he is best-remembered as an editor of Thoreau, Longfellow, and Louisa May Alcott's works, and for his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Bronson Alcott. Hardcover in the scarce jacket, as pictured; first edition (first printing) with date on title & copyright pages. Light wear to book, corners lightly rubbed, small scuff to front cover, pencil names on free ensheet & opposite half-title, THREE PAGES with some purple INK UNDERLINING, else very good; jacket a bit rubbed & scuffed, small hole to front panel mended internally with non-archival but non-yellowing tape; minor tears & small chips.
