About This Item

Garden City, NY Hanover House, 1957. Hardcover First Edition (1957); probable later printing, as First Edition is not directly stated, as would have been Hanover House's customary practice. Good+ to Very Good in Good+ DJ: The Book shows some dampstain-discoloration along the outside edges and lower edges of the panels; some faint foxing and tanning to the endpapers; faint dusting to the blue-tinted top edge; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. A carefully used copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing mild wear and a serious cosmetic flaw among some other minor flaws. A presentable reading copy. The DJ shows scant loss to chipping; moderate wear to the extremities; mild rubbing to the panels, with faint, but pervasive soiling to the white background field of the rear panel; the price has been clipped. Remains serviceable, but shows some wear and cosmetic flaws. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.2 x 5.65 x 0.7 inches). 153 pages. Edited, with Introduction and Notes by Terence L. Connolly, S.J. Language: English. Weight: 10 ounces. First Edition (1957); probable later printing, as First Edition is not directly stated, as would have been Hanover House's customary practice. Hardback with DJ. Francis Thompson (1859 – 1907) was an English poet and Catholic mystic. His most famous poem, The Hound of Heaven, describes the pursuit of the human person by God. Phrases from his poetry have been lifted by others and made famous. The U.S. Supreme Court in Brown II used "with all deliberate speed" for the remedy sought in their famous decision on school desegregation. A phrase in "The Kingdom of God" is the source of the title of Han Suyin's novel A Many-Splendoured Thing. In addition, Thompson wrote the most famous cricket poem, the nostalgic "At Lord's". He also wrote The Poppy (1893), Sister Songs (1895), New Poems (1897), and a posthumously published essay, Shelley (1909). G. K. Chesterton said shortly after his death that "with Francis Thompson we lost the greatest poetic energy since Browning." Among Thompson's devotees was the young J. R. R. Tolkien, who purchased a volume of Thompson's works in 1913-1914, and later said that it was an important influence on his own writing.
