Hardcover Book and Dust Jacket in Very Good Condition. Clear archival protective jacket cover. On front endpapers, map of Bering's route across Siberia and first explorations from Kamchatka; on rear ep, Bering's Alaskan Expedition, Route of the 'St. Peter' (Bering) and the 'St. Paul' (Chirikof) . Expedition in the first half of the 18th century. Book bound in yellow-green cloth, black and green titles on spine, very clean, no marks, no edgewear; top edge of text block has a few spots. Rough cut. Tight and solid binding, square, with endbands. Small former owner name label on paste down. On lower hinge area on endpapers and flyleafs, front and back, there is a triangular stain one and a half inches tall , three quarters of an inch wide onto each page; it is pale tan; this does not extend onto text pages. Text pages very clean and unmarked, no creases. Turquoise jacket with black print and illustration is clean, no marks, slight wear to corners, and spine heel lightly chipped. The heroic story of Vitus Jonassen Bering's famous expeditions into the unknown in the first half of the 18the century. He was a Danish captain serving in the Russian Navy and was commissioned by Czar Peter the Great to explore the far reaches of the Russian Empire. His expedition took him 6,000 miles overland to the Kamchatka peninsula, the easternmost tip of Siberia. Then, they had to build ships for the journey into uncharted seas. Bering became the first European to record sight of the west coast of America, traveling eastward from the Asian Continent.
