About This Item

London England: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1969. This is the first complete translation of Frank Edgar's TATSUNIYOYI NA HAUSA, a three volume Corpus of Hausa Folklore, History and Miscellanea The Original Hausa Volumes Contain 1200 Pages, Comprising 800 Individual Items, Ranging from Riddles to Lengthy Eyewitness Accounts of the British Occupation and Events Immediately Preceding It. There is One seventy Page Legal item, a version of the Risala (a summary of the maliki code of muslim law which was in use in Nigeria at that time). The Translation Is Also in Three Volumes, but the Order Has Been Rearranged to Bring the Folklore into the First Two Volumes and the Other matter into the Last volume. The Folklore Itself Has Been Arranged so That the Variants and Tales of Similar Genre appear in the Same Section. A Concordance Has Been Added to Each Volume to Enable Reference to Be Made to the Original Hausa Volumes. Cross-References Are Also Given to Other Collections of Hausa tales in Translation. Professor M. G. Smith has provided a sociological introduction, and there is also an introduction by the translator, who is associate Professor of Hausa at the University of Wisconsin. 440pp A LOVELY COPY!
