New York: Harper & Row, 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall. 1st Printing 1 Copyright date 1977, first edition, first printing. Red and brown cover over boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Brown the inside covers front and back fore edge pages are deckled. No tears, bent pages, nor any writing. Shelf wear to the edges and to the head and toe of the spine are as new. Dust Jacket, no tears, bent flaps, nor is it price clipped. Back panel shows some rubbing the upper part near the top edge, some very small chips out of the front flap bottom edge. Front and back panel illustrations remains very bright and clean. Jacket now in a clear cover. Text remains bright and clean, binding is secure, a scarce second book by this Booker winning author.

Synopsis

In the Heart of the Country (1977) is an English language novel by J. M. Coetzee which delves in the complex relationships that form between the colonizer and the colonized. It takes place on a desolate farm in South Africa told through the perspective of an intelligent yet meek European woman. She clashes with her father when he takes an African mistress, causing a rift that leads towards vengeance, violence and a muddling of her own relationship with the Africans. In the U.S.A.
