Small quarto (10 X 6 3/4 inches) Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1955. Great Southwest Travel Series Number Two. 42 pages, printed by Saul and Lillian Marks at the Plantin Press; includes an Index of Titles, a representative fold-out map drawn in cartoon style showing the "Heart of the Southwest" extending from the border of Wyoming on the North through Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico to Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico on the South; Nevada, and the Mojave Desert in California in the West. Quarter cloth, very good condition.

One hundred nineteen significant titles covering the rich spectrum of Southwest literature, critically described by Powell.

Folio (13 3/4 X 10 1/4 inches) Detroit, Michigan: Detroit Free Press Printing Co., (circa 1913-1914) promotional advertisement of 8 unnumbered stapled pages, illustrated with full page black and white halftone photo stills of scenes from the play to be performed at Hamburger's Majestic Theatre "Two Weeks Commencing Monday, June 2, Regular Matinees." Title in large letters, cover printed in two colors, original wrappers, good condition (minor bending and curling to edges and margins - not affecting contents).

"Henry W. Savage's $60,000 Musical and Dramatic Production combining all the attractive elements of Drama-Grand Opera-Musical Comedy. The Largest Musical and Dramatic Organization ever toured. 150 People Special Symphony Orchestra. The World's Most Sumptuous Panoramic Pageant."

The Majestic was located at 845 South Broadway. It was built in 1913, and knocked down in the early 1930s. Savage was a theatrical manager. His play "Everywoman" was performed in Los Angeles shortly after the Majestic opened.

Original brochure folded five times to form six panels printed and illustrated on both sides; when fully opened it unfolds again, 1/3 from the bottom, to form a 17 1/2 x 24 inch poster-style display of halftone photos, description of the "... historical pageant of the West .... " and an argument for low fares.

Along the left side is a representational outline of the West Coast and part of the Southwest, extending to El Paso and Salt Lake City. The route, shown in red, is highlighted with small black and white sketches of sights along the way. There are also halftone black and white photo vignettes of Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, the Santa Barbara mission, and two examples of the "streamlined" Greyhound buses, one of which offered sleeping accommodations for 25 people.

While the late Lawrence Clark Powell was a marvelous writer on the history of the book, his literary passion focused on the Southwest both in terms of its history, literature, and culture. Issued in a small print run in the Great Southwest Travel Series, Larry Powell here has listed and annotated over 100 of the great classics of the region.
