Grant MacEwan's 1960 novel details the life of John Ware, a courageous cowboy and rancher born into slavery. Ware, born circa 1845–50 in the United States amidst immense racism and discrimination, became a successful Alberta rancher who settled his first ranch near Millarville and his second ranch near Brooks, Alberta. Ware is regarded still as one of the most prominent Albertan ranchers and cowboys to ever have lived, not only for his skilled farming techniques and horsemanship, but too for his determination and strength in maneuvering a discriminatory society and contributing to the gradual revolution of an industry.
