About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn. FINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Colour scenic, photographic illustrated dw/dj - photograph repeated to both covers - with minimal shelf-wear; negligible creasing to edges,no nicks or tears present.Miniscule bumping with reciprocal creases to head of spine/backstrip.Top edge minisculely thumbed, but generally clean else,fore-edges clean; contents bright, tight and very clean - and no dog-ear reading creases to corners.Bright, clean, plain blue paper-covered bds with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/ backstrip and immaculate plain dark blue endpapers. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-231pp (paginated) half-title+title pages,a contents list (all unpaginated),9 novellas/short stories. Amis's short stories make his novels look prim. They are also more frankly satirical.Whole worlds are created - or invented. In 'Straight Fiction',everyone is gay (apart from the beleaguered 'straight' community); in 'Career Move', screenplay writers submit their works to little magazines, while poets are flown first-class to Los Angeles; in 'The Janitor on Mars',a sardonic robot gives us some strange news about life in the solar system. In 'Let Me Count the Times' a man has a mad affair with himself.'Heavy Water' portrays the exhaustion of working-class culture; 'State of England' its weird resuscitation. And in 'The Coincidence of the Arts' an English baronet becomes entangled with an African-American chess hustler. The earliest story,'Denton's Death',was first published in 1975,but the bulk of the collection can be firmly labelled 'most recent work'.See also rja713.
