London, Printed for John Murray, 1815. . First edition, 8vo. Contemporary publisher's calf, gilt, rebacked, front cover detached, marbled edges; pages crisp and clean. [6], 53 pp. 'The subsequent poems were written at the request of the author's friend, the Hon. D. Kinnaird, for a Selection of Hebrew Melodies, and have been published, with the music, arranged, by Mr, Braham and Mr. Nathan.'Isaac Nathan (c. 1791-1864) was a Jewish-English composer, musicologist, journalist and self-publicist. Son of a synagogues cantor, Nathan was classically trained by Domenico Corri, who was the student of legendary vocal teacher Nicola Porpora. In 1813 he conceived the idea of publishing settings of tunes from synagogue usage and persuaded Lord Byron to provide the words for these. The result was his famous Hebrew Melodies. It is lacking the inserted titles and half-titles enabling the pamphlet-poems of Byron to date to be bound up in two volumes. This is the first issue with the verso of E4 with an advertisement for Rogers' "Jacqueline" followed by a six line advertisement for Campbell's "Selected Beauties of English Poetry," noted as "in the press." Randolph 50. Wise I, 103-4. Scarce. Included in this collection is "She Walks in Beauty," Byron's legendary Romantic Poem based on his first meeting with his cousin Ann Wilmot.
