Description:
New York: Harcourt Brace & Company. Near Fine. [1937]. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. A Near Fine first edition/first printing, little soiling, edgewear and tanning to pages; Heine is both a paradoxical and a poetic figure, and Louis Untermeyer explores both aspects of his life and work in this well-researched and engaging book. Heine was born in 1797 in a prosperous Berlin family and inherited a considerable fortune. He nonetheless chose to become a poet and struggled unsuccessfully to make a living from his writing. Heine's paradoxical persona - simultaneously proud and humble, intellectual and passionate, idealistic and skeptical - is well-known, but Untermeyer provides a richly detailed portrait of Heine's life and work, exploring his relationships with friends, family, and lovers, his poetic themes, and his use of irony and metaphor. This book is an excellent introduction to one of the most important poets of the nineteenth century.; 8vo; 403 pages .
