Synopsis

The Modern Library has played a significant role in American cultural life for the better part of a century. The series was founded in 1917 by the publishers Boni and Liveright and eight years later acquired by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. It provided the foundation for their next publishing venture, Random House. The Modern Library has been a staple of the American book trade, providing readers with affordable hardbound editions of important works of literature and thought. For the Modern Library's seventy-fifth anniversary, Random House redesigned the series, restoring as its emblem the running torchbearer created by Lucian Bernhard in 1925 and refurbishing jackets, bindings, and type, as well as inaugurating a new program of select-ing titles. The Modern Library continues to provide the world's best books, at the best prices.

Reviews

On Jan 13 2017, a reader said:
I made a trip to Manhattan to purchase this book at a used book store on Broadway and 13th Street. I had searched high and low to find it. I was not disappointed. Though I purchased the book for about $7 or $8 it is now worth over $700, but I will never part with it. It is an inside look at what it is like to ride with the Hells Angels back in the 60s. That has always been my dream, both asleep and awake. The part I remembered most about the book was Hunter Thompson telling one of the Angels that only a coward would hit his wife. This triggered an attack upon Thompson, which ultimately ended his saga with the group. I remember that the book itself took me about 2 or 3 days to read. Once you pick it up, you cannot put it down. Of all the books I have ever read, it is up there with Dale Carnegie's "How To Stop Worrying and Start Living" and "Alive" the story of the Andes' plane crash survivors.
