About This Item

Paul Elek, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Like New. 9x6x0. UNCOMMON, GIFT QUALITY 1978 FIRST EDITION (U.K.) hardcover with dust jacket. UNREAD COPY with clean, unmarked, firmly bound pages. Jacket remains bright, clean, and glossy. Nice copy! "Hengistbury, a Dorset promontory which just out into the English Channel, was a major port in late prehistoric times. In the last hundred and fifty years before the Roman Conquest of Britain, an extensive and vigorous pattern of trading grew up between Hengistbury (serving the Iron Age communities of Wessex) and the tribes living in Brittany and Normandy. This trade was drastically disrupted by Caesar's campaigns in north-west Gaul in 56 BC. Thereafter, Hengistbury developed as an urban centre with a range of activities, including the minting of coins and the extraction of silver. Professor Cunliffe here puts Hengistbury in a wider perspective than before as one of the most important trading complexes in Iron Age Britain. This original historical interpretation, supported by splended illustrations of grave-goods and other objects (utensils, jewellery, bridle-bits, and coins), will make fascinating reading for both professional and amateur archaeologists.
